New Pictures NTAs 2019: Piers Morgan and Phillip Schofield battle it out for the Daytime gong

Their TV shows were both nominated for the coveted Daytime award, with This Morning taking home the gong.

But ahead of the ceremony, Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan displayed his competitive side with presenter Phillip Schofield as they put on a hilarious display on the red carpet at the 23rd National Television Awards, held at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday evening.

TV presenter Piers, 53, engaged in a friendly rivalry with the 56-year-old as he held his fist up against the fellow ITV star, before the pair took selfies of themselves with their phones.

The pair proved competition is fierce as Dancing On Ice star Phillip documented their hilarious banter on social media.

Interrupting his clip, the former BGT host shouted: 'Schofield is going down and the speech is going to be great!'

A determined Phillip quipped: 'He's a man that doesn't stand a chance!'

The pair ensured they pulled out all the stops for the snazzy affair, with Piers sporting a classic black suit, while Phillip rocked a grey tuxedo.

The National Television Awards marked one of the most exciting nights in British TV, with faces from reality, scripted drama and comedy, soaps and quiz shows hoping to scoop a gong.

The annual Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award, perhaps the most prestigious accolade of the evening, saw Love Island, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, All Round To Mrs Brown's and The Graham Norton Show lose to reality TV juggernaut I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

2019's shortlist saw the likes of Killing Eve, Bodyguard and The Cry battle it out as some of the most talked-about new shows of the past 12 months.

ITV stole the show in the Daytime category, with This Morning winning for the ninth time after beating network companions Good Morning Britain, Loose Women, and The Jeremy Kyle Show to the accolade, as well as Channel 4 show Sunday Brunch.

The awards, which were the most exciting and closely-fought yet, handed over power to the viewers, who have been voting since October.
