A U.S. service member has been killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan, marking the second American death there in 2019, officials say.
The service member died in 'enemy small-arms fire' and their identity will be withheld pending a 24-hour next-of-kin notification.
'One U.S. service member was killed in Afghanistan today as a result of enemy small arms fire,' Resolute Support, the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan, said in a statement.
The death was announced by Army Col. Dave Butler, the top American spokesman in Afghanistan on January 22, according to Stars and Stripes.
The death is under investigation.

Military officials declined to specify which enemy was responsible for the death, where the casualty took place, or which branch of the military the victim belonged to.
The death was announced just days after Sgt. Cameron A. Meddock, of Texas, passed away on Thursday in Germany suffering wounds from enemy fire in Afghanistan on January 13.
The 26-year-old sergeant was wounded while fighting in the Jawad district of Badghis.
He was an Army Ranger that hailed from Spearman, Texas and was a member of the elite 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
He passed away during his second deployment to Afghanistan, according to the Army.

There are currently some 14,000 U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan. The U.S. and NATO formally concluded their combat mission there in 2014.
American forces are working on counterterror operations against al-Qaida and Islamic State fighters and advising Afghan security forces.
The war rages on and on Monday, the Taliban launched a devastating suicide bombing attack on an Afghan military base in Maidan Wardak, which killed 45 people and wounded 70 others.
Afterwards the Taliban announced it was in peace talks with American diplomats in Qatar.
'Following American acceptance of the agenda of ending invasion of Afghanistan and preventing Afghanistan from being used against other countries in the future, talks with American representatives took place today in Doha,' a Taliban spokesman said in a statement, according to the New York Times.
Still the Taliban and American Special Operation troops and Afghan forces continue to clash over territory as negotiations drag on to end war now in its 17th year.
The Taliban controls almost half of the land in Afghanistan and carries out attacks daily, according to AP.
President Donald Trump is seeking to half the number of U.S. troops in the Afghanistan sometime this year.
