Herxheim in Southwest Germany
German archeologists recently uncovered a mass grave site at Herxheim that dates back 7,000 years. It wouldn’t be unusual, except the remains of the bodies were skinned and chewed on. It also appears that many of the bones had marrow sucked from them. Nothing says spooky like ancient cannibals.

Villisca Ax Murder House in Villisca, Iowa
This ridiculously haunted house has a gruesome history. In 1912 a couple named Josiah and Sarah Moore were brutally murdered along with their four children and two house guests. The killer used an ax and when they were done draped all of the victim’s faces with cloth, as well as every mirror in the house. There are day time and overnight tours of the premises, where scary shit is constantly happening to visitors.
Chernobyl in Chernobyl, Ukraine

Door to Hell in Derweze, Turkmenistan
This 30-foot-wide crater sits burning in the middle of the desert. In 1971, a team of geologists set up a drilling platform to figure out more about natural gas reserves in the area. When the rig collapsed into an underground cavern, the scientists set the crater on fire in the hopes that it would stop the spread of methane gas. They thought the fire would last a few hours, but it’s been over 40 years.

Village of Nagoro in Japan
This shrinking village has gotten smaller and smaller due to a dwindling population of older citizens. An artist named Ayano Tsukimi moved back to her home village and decided to make a bunch of incredibly creepy dolls to make the town feel less empty. Great solution…

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave in Belize
Inside this dark and already eerie cave lies the skeletal remains of 14 people who were reportedly sacrificed to Mayan gods. They were all killed by blunt force trauma to the head, and about half of the victims were children. In order to get here, you must swim inside the cave mouth and then wade up the cave river. No fucking thank you.
