MONEY saving guru Martin Lewis has revealed the secret tricks young drivers can use to cut down their car insurance by hundreds of pounds.

He insisted drivers could slash their costs by carefully timing the date they secure their renewal.

Speaking on his Money Show on ITV, he pointed out the price drops from 35 days to 21 days, then rises again after.

“I’ve got a bag full of tricks for you,” he told viewers.

“The answers often aren’t common sense.

EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM

“It’s all about the date when you get your renewal – 21 days beforehand,” he explained.

“It’s not exact for everyone, but it shows how timing it can make a big difference for everyone.

“When it comes to car insurance, be the early bird who catches the worm.”

His advice couldn’t come at a better time for young drivers as the latest figures show they can now expect to pay a staggering £1,317 in premiums.

ADD AN EXTRA DRIVER

The expert also revealed that comprehensive cover can be cheaper than a third-party fire and theft policy.

This is because selecting the first option means insurers see you as lower risk.

Adding an extra driver can also cut your costs, Martin revealed.

One viewer said he was able to save a colleague £500 by adding him, with his 10 years’ experience, as a second driver.

But Martin warned that you should never put them down as the main driver – as this can count as fraud.
