New Pictures Matt Chapman’s Good, Bad and Ugly from this week’s world of horse racing

IT’S BEEN an eventful week in the world of horse racing.

There has been some brilliant action on the track, none more so than in the point-to-point world. That’s where we start this week.

Marie Fitzgerald
GOOD

If you haven’t seen it, then check out the clip of Mikey Sweeney riding at a point-to-point at the weekend – it’s on my Twitter and Instagram feeds, where it has already had over 32,000 and 7,500 views respectively!

Sweeney, a jockey not many know much about, although he used to work for Willie Mullins and performs primarily for Declan Queally who is the leading point-to-point trainer this season, was riding a horse called Ask Heather.

The problem was he asked Ask Heather at the last and Ask Heather did not produce a great jump!

Despite doing her best to get rid of Sweeney, he held on for dear life and, despite being headed, went on to score easily. To be fair, very much helped by the horse who he was challenging at the last giving up on the run in!

Anyway, Sweeney performed heroics, stayed on board. He deserves a mention in this column because it’s so easy to forget what heroics jockeys perform on a daily basis. Maybe not in such an extreme way. But often unheralded. Have a Yeeehaaa Mikey.

BAD

Many suggested Altior’s romp at Ascot was disappointing or bad in the Clarence House Chase, as he jumped left on occasions.

It’s fair to say Nicky Henderson, his trainer, was not one of them. and nor am I.

Henderson was extremely nervous, but was a legend before and after when I interviewed him on ITV.

Altior definitely did go left at the obstacles, but check out the winning margins.

Altior beat Diego du Charmil 19l at Kempton over Christmas, and beat him 41l in the Clarence House.

Altior beat Fox Norton and eased down 7l, and the latter was only rated 8lb in inferior. If you took the form literally you could easily raise Altior’s rating by a few pounds to say 178/80.

That would make it his best performance over fences ever!

This was not bad. It was awesome.

UGLY

It could get ugly Down Under later this week when the Longines Worlds Best horse ranking are revealed.

Let’s face it, Australians will be furious if Winx is not top rated. And she beat Benbatl didn’t she? She must be a star (hehe).

I doubt Winx will be clear top rated, for all that she is magnificent. There’s every chance she will share the spoils with the brilliant Enable, who is trained in Britain, landed the Arc in France and the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in America.

Winx wins in Australia. The Japanese filly Almond Eye is no mug either!

All three are fillies, and it’s very hard for a filly to top the list. Fair play to any of the three if they are best of the best.

I’ll go for a draw though. Good luck Aussies!
