New Pictures Amber Rudd warns up to 40 MPs will QUIT if they are blocked from stopping No Deal Brexit

UP TO 40 Ministers will resign unless they are free to stop a No Deal next week, Amber Rudd has warned Theresa May.

Sources yesterday revealed the pro-EU Work and Pensions Secretary has told the PM’s aides she faces ‘dozens’ of resignations unless they can back a radical cross-party Brexit plan.

Under the proposal drafted by Labour’s Yvette Cooper and the Tory’s Nick Boles, the PM would be forced to extend the Article50 negotiating deadline beyond March 29 to New Year’s Eve if a deal cannot be reached by February 26.

The amendment to the PM’s Plan B was due to be officially tabled on Monday night.

One source told The Times: “Amber is telling Downing Street to make it a free vote on behalf of lots of people.”

The move threatens another bitter Cabinet dust-up later today (Tues).

It came as Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood publicly called for the PM to extend the A50 deadline if it meant getting the “right result” for her Brexit deal.

Posting a picture of his son on Twitter, Mr Ellwood said: “Cooked a banana cake yesterday. Told my son it will be ready in 20 mins – according to the cookbook. It took 30.

“It was a big decision – honouring the cookbook or take more time to get the right result.”

Separately, Business Minister Richard Harrington enraged Brexiteers by suggesting No Deal would be an “absolute disaster” for the country. He warned Jaguar and Mini could be forced to close their car plants.

He said the Brexiteer call for a ‘clean Brexit’ was “fanciful nonsense and it must be stopped”.

Meanwhile, leaked internal Border Force documents suggested cross-Channel freight volumes could collapse by 75 per cent to 85 per cent in a No Deal Brexit.

Ms Rudd was the first Cabinet Minister to go public with calls for the PM to consider a ‘Plan B’ in December. She also said she could see the argument for a second referendum.

She was one of three pro-EU Ministers shunned on Friday as Theresa May met with Cabinet colleagues to discuss possible Plan B solutions.

Theresa May’s chief of staff Gavin Barwell was on Sunday said to have told Cabinet Ministers that if Mrs May’s push to renegotiate the Irish backstop fails she may have to offer to stand down.

He is understood to be pushing the PM to consider committing the UK to full membership of the customs union.

Neither Ms Rudd nor No.10 would comment yesterday.
