Fans went crazy after the Grey’s Anatomy Season Finale went to air on May 17, 2012, when Lexie Grey succumbed to her massive injuries from the plane crash and died. Petitions have been created in order to bring the character of Lexie Grey back, however if Chyler Leigh wanted to leave the show, then one has to wonder what good a petition will do.
Will ‘Little Grey’ Get a Funeral?
Plenty of fans are hopeful that Lexie Grey will get a proper send off, however if we look back at the eight seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and the five seasons of Private Practice; there has only been one funeral portrayed on both shows. George O’Malley’s funeral in Season 6 and Pete Wilder’s flashbacks to his dead wife’s funeral in Season 3 were the only genuine funerals shown. Shonda Rhimes went on record back in Season 2 on the Grey Matter Writer’s blog to say that she does not like funerals on TV, so that is likely a big explanation as to why we have not seen very many on both of these shows.
So the chances of seeing a funeral for ‘Little Grey’ are unlikely however; it is very likely that she will get some kind of send off no matter what occurs when Season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy returns in September. What Shonda has planned for Season 9 is anyone’s guess.
Shonda Believes Fans Missed the Point
Because of all the hype surrounding the ‘big death’ that was part of the Season Finale, Shonda explained in a recent interview with E! Online that the fans missed the point of the episode, she went on to says that: “They are still out there. They're still out there in the forest, and we don't know if they are going to be OK. We left it open for a reason because…I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn't mean they're going to be alive when the season starts up. We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season.”
Is Shonda just teasing here or will we see another character meet their demise? The answer to that question is no; it’s not likely, unless she need to trim more of the cast which is likely the reason Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver have gone. In any case; Shonda’s words in the interview make it highly likely that when Season 9 returns it is likely it will pick up from the last scene of the finale. Shonda made a point of telling us that they are still out there, which has to mean that there will not be a time jump.
Lexie Grey Returning As A Ghost
Having cruised a few Grey’s Anatomy forums in the last week or so; some fans are hopeful that this could happen and given that Lexie’s death is still new and many fans are in denial it’s quite understandable that many fans may wish for that. Sometimes when we become attached to a character on TV, it’s difficult to let go. However Shonda stated in her interview to E! Online that when they did that in Season 5 with Denny; it really did not work. So it’s unlikely Shonda will not make that mistake again.
Season 9 Could Be Very Different
So Season 9 looks to be going in a completely different direction according to Shonda in her interview with E! Online. Given that Lexie was the only main character who was still a resident, and the others will be attendings in September, this could be a clue as where Shonda is going.
The intention could be to focus on our original three as they make their way through their fellowship training. As for April Kepner; many fans think this is the perfect opportunity to trim the cast further and get rid of the character; she is not very popular, in-fact many of the forums were hoping she was the one who would get the axe in the finale. The other question is: how will Shonda write for April now? She does not have a job anywhere; she is officially an attending, but not board certified. It would be unrealistic for the Chief to just hire her back.
Will Someone Else Leave
As for the plane crash victims and what their fate will be is anyone’s guess. It could be a hard road back for most of them and the accident could be the deciding factor in whether Cristina, Meredith, Derek and the others remain at Seattle Grace. Patrick Dempsey is unlikely to have signed on for a full season; so that he is free to pursue racing and movie offers. Derek's hand injury will give him the time off he wants. As for Mark and Arizona; it’s more likely that they will be okay despite their awful injuries. The hope is for most of the fans that everyone will be fine and we have a few great story arcs to begin the season. And doing a time jump would probably be a big mistake.
