But the Saturday night rescue in Derby was branded “absolutely crazy” by local MP Pauline Latham. She said: “Why did they need the armed response unit? What did they think the gerbil was going to do?

“Surely there’s more important things for them to be doing.”

Police wrote on Facebook: “Our officers have been on the sharp edge of policing as always.

“The RSPCA in­formed us that an individual who was in prison, and had been for nearly a week now, had a gerbil at his home.  Sadly the individual was refusing to give access.

“Our officers forced entry with some help from the armed response unit and found the gerbil.”

They also turned off a gas fire. Derbyshire Police said yesterday: “Attendance had no impact on operational policing.”
