Farewell Pete Wilder. Seems that actor Tim Daly, who has portrayed the character of Pete Wilder for the last five seasons, will not be back in the Fall. Private Practice was not expected to be renewed for a sixth season, so it’s unlikely the show could continue without trimming the budget. Tim Daly announced to his fans, viaTwitter that his departure was not his idea. An article in Zap2it has confirmed that he will be bowing out, though ABC has made no comment.
Tim Daly Tweets His Fans
Tim Daly tweeted today: "Wonderful fans of PPP, Shonda informed my agent today that Pete won’t be returning for season 6. It was a great 5 yrs. R.I.P. Pete Wilder."
Shonda Rhimes informed his agent? That seems a little cold. Perhaps she is not allowed to comment or say too much to the actors when it is a network decision. In television it is totally normal for networks not to pick up the actor for the next season, however for the show-runner to inform the actor via his agent seems more than cold. One would think that Shonda Rhimes would have called him personally, given Daly’s long history with the show.
When We Last Saw Pete
In the last two episodes of Private Practice; Pete was in really, hot water over his decision to terminate life saving care to his patient as the patient had requested that no extreme measures be taken. The problem with this was that the patient had not signed any DNR paperwork. However; Pete felt that it was the right thing to do given that he knew what his patient wanted and so did the patient’s partner. Pete was subsequently arrested and thrown in jail.
He is eventually granted bail, but stubbornly refused to apologise for his actions, which he believed were right at the time. Violet pleaded with Pete to think of this family and that they needed him to be out of jail. Pete, Violet and Lucas were in a good place at the end of the finale two weeks ago, however Pete was freaking out that he might go to jail.
Will Shonda Kill Pete Off Too?
Not a word has been said about how Pete will be written out; speculation that he may go to jail is likely to be not the case, especially if Tim Daly filmed his final scenes in the finale. It is possible there were scenes filmed in readiness for next season, but who knows? A better theory would be that Pete jumps bail and is never to be seen again. Perhaps he runs off to Africa to do missionary work. This would put Violet in a very dark place which would may or may not be popular with fans. Pete Wilder could also be killed off, but it’s unlikely. Shonda may want Pete to come to Seattle Grace one day, so having him dead may not work and that action would not be popular with fans, given the recent death on Grey’s Anatomy.
As for the ratings of this show being affected by Tim Daly’s absence, it’s unlikely. The ratings were already pretty bad and worsening in the new Tuesday at 10pm time slot. Private Practice will return to ABC this fall. How many episodes have been ordered has not been confirmed yet. It’s pretty clear that this may be the series last season.
What do you think about Daly leaving the show? Will you watch Private Practice without Pete?
