How to Build Your Home Library

How many books do you have at home? If you’re a bookworm, you probably have lots. If you’re a student, then you should have a lot. While many argue that books are now obsolete, the physical act of flipping pages still counts for something. And how about finding yourself in need of a reference book while studying in the middle of the night? How many times have you had trouble with the librarian for returning the books late because you needed extra research time? The library is your salvation to a lot of things. So when it throws you out during closing time, you feel so resentful that you swear if you ever had your own library… No, wait! You can have your own library.
First things first — you have to have one room in your house where you will now transform into your study/library. You need a space which has a high ceiling so you can put up big shelves and you also need it to have a good ventilation system so that it won’t smell of old books. The room has to be a place where you can stay all day — comfy and more importantly, well-lighted.
Furnish. Your library doesn’t need a lot of things because it’s basically a room for research and study. You’ll only need a study table, a comfortable chair, your computer, and shelves everywhere.
Don’t pig out in your library. Yes, it seems a good idea to eat a ham sandwich while reading a journal, but the last thing you need in your library are pests which might eat the pages off your precious books.
Categorize your library. Even if it’s your library and you’re the only one who uses it, there is still a need to categorize books so you won’t spend half an hour looking for your reference. Remember that the reason you built your home library is so that you can save time by not having to walk a few blocks to get a good book.
Invest. Building a library that you can use means getting the books you need. Prepare to invest. Allocate a book fund in your budget and take trips to bookstores (I prefer used/bargain bookstores over your Barnes and Noble) and scout for titles to improve your collection.
Observe proper book care. We’re not talking about peeking into your paperbacks so as to keep spines pristine, just be sure that you don’t abuse them too much.
Or, if you would want to be a space saver, try considering building an e-libraryof your own. Part of the attraction of getting e-books is that they don’t need trees to be killed, and that they don’t take up much physical space. Just make sure that you organize your files.
