“You just get stronger”: How Powerlifting Saved My Life

The free weights were in back of the gym, which meant I had to walk a gauntlet of giant, muscular men all grunting and yelling and slamming weights to reach the empty squat racks. Thankfully they were all empty or I might’ve walked out, unwilling to wait, unwilling to loiter near the intimidating men. I struggled to move the 45-pound bar to a height that could work for me, panicking momentarily when it felt so heavy being hefted by my scrawny noodle arms, but after stepping into the rack you can’t leave without squatting; that would be ridiculous. I stepped under the bar, and the moment my hands gripped the knurling, the knurling gripped my traps — there was nothing but me and the iron. I took a deep breath and I squatted. I stood back up without falling over and I grinned.

I started lifting in May of 2013. I was 23, just starting a pre-med post-bac program that was going to lead to medical school. I had quit my job as a preschool teacher, where I’d spent the past seven months overeating out of anxiety and boredom because there’s not much else you can do when you’re watching two-year-olds all day. When none of my clothes fit comfortably I decided to change my body instead of buying new ones, because I loathe shopping for clothes.
Running-loathing millennial that I am, I started to Google. Somehow I found this Nerd Fitness post about a powerlifter named Staci. The idea you could change your body composition without running was news to me, and Staci was close enough to my height and weight that her progress seemed attainable. So I kept reading. I bought Starting Strength. I watched form videos until I realized all I was really doing was procrastinating.
Starting Strength is (on the internet) the Beginner’s Bible for powerlifting. I’ve since gotten different advice and cues from other programs and more importantly from my coach, but it was an excellent starting resource for someone with social anxiety who didn’t have anyone to ask at the time. The most important thing I took from it was the importance of checking your ego at the door. Start with “just the bar.” Add weight every week; keep progressing until you can’t.

Simple Eye Care Facts and Tips

Whether or not you believe that eyes are the windows to your soul, you have to agree that your eyes are pretty much important to your life. So much that you cannot imagine living life if something bad ever happened to them. In reality, though, we barely give our eyes the proper care they need. Read on about eye care and see things more clearly.
Too much staring at your computer monitor can strain your eyes. Be sure to move about and shift your gaze after every 50 minutes in front of your computer. Not only will this improve your body’s circulation it will also give time for your eyes to be at ease.
Be particular with makeup. Eye makeup can have very harmful ingredients so buy the ones that are more natural, and wipe off makeup completely.
Keep the soft skin around your eyes well nourished with light moisturizers to avoid getting wrinkles at an early age.
Young people and children have larger pupils than adults, which means their eyes are more exposed to harmful sun rays. Wearing proper eye wear like sunglasses when it’s too sunny outside is a good way to protect your eyes against UV rays.
Go to your eye doctor regularly. It is important to have your doctor check your eyes at least twice a year. Also, consult with your doctor before you self-medicate when you’re feeling something wrong with your vision.
Avoid touching your eyes. Your fingers are among the dirtiest parts of your body, so make sure you don’t touch your eyes if you don’t have to. Use a clean tissue if you have to remove something or wash your hands first.

Four Self-motivating Tips

We all go through stress and bouts of depression, but not all of us can get over it fast enough. In this day and age where everyone has hectic schedules and our best friends are almost always too busy to cheer us up, we have no one but ourselves to get us out of the puddles of misery. Take a look at these tips to boost your spirit.
Control your thoughts. I know thoughts can be so random but you have to stop yourself when you find negative thoughts flashing in your mind one after the other. Talk to yourself and say STOP. Saying it loud is more effective rather than just thinking of stopping. So what if others think you’re being weird? At least it works.
Keep a list of your assets and take a peek at your past achievements to boost your ego when you need it.
Take care of yourself. If you always feel tired and weak, you’re bound to be trapped in a sour mood. Being healthy is linked to feeling good which is why you should make sure you’re always in your best form
Choose which criticism you’ll attend to. Snub off bad feedback from jerks but reflect on the constructive criticism of people you respect. Jerks are out to pull you down so why bother with their comments?

What to Do when You Are Laid Off

It should not come as a surprise if one day you find yourself jobless, as so many people are getting affected by the job cuts. You might think all you can do is to be on your toes 24/7 but you can do a lot more than being cautious. You can be prepared.
When the tempest hits you unexpectedly, here are your choices.
Use your welfare. If you’ve been laid off, filing for unemployment could save you from being downright penniless. Don’t be embarrassed. You’ve been paying your dues when you were employed and now that you need your privilege, use it.
Make a list of jobs you can do if worse comes to worst. Make a list of side jobs you can do while looking for your next career path. Some of the more usual choices include editing, proofreading, tutoring, consultancy, and other freelance work.
Apply for a temporary night shift job. Night shift jobs are great for people who need the day to look for the next big day job. Temporary agencies have jobs with menial work so you can get by without exhausting yourself.
Review your contract. You might have overlooked small texts in your contract which can move your company to shell out some separation pay or compensation for laying you off.

3 Tips to Win Back Your Ex

People say that regret comes in the end and ain’t it true! But then we’re just human and people make mistakes. But when your girlfriend tells you that she’s finally done with you–don’t waste any time on regret. Do what you can to win her back! Here’s 3 tips on how to do it!
Whose fault is it, really? Forget the past issues and focus on the recent argument. Whose fault is it this time? If you’re the one to blame, humble yourself. Sorry is the hardest thing to say but being smug about it will not bring you closer to forgiveness. Identify exactly your mistake (Were you overly jealous? Were you possessive? Were you unfair to him?) and promise never to repeat the same mistake again.
Pursue her again. After you’ve given your sincere apologies, you have to exert a lot of effort to win her back! Be visible. Visit her often, bring her flowers and other stuff she likes. Call her often, take her to dinner (in places other than cheap diners or fastfood restaurants) -things you used to do back when you were just courting her. It’s gonna melt her heart.
Show her you’re serious with your promise. Weeks after making your promise, show that you have renewed your character. This will assure her that you’re also very serious in getting her back. Seek the help of your common friends to testify for you that you have indeed changed.

Freelancing: Protect Yourself through Legal Forms

I know I’ve written a little bit about this matter a few months ago but I’d like to re-emphasize the point. I have a lot of friends who are freelancing graphics artists and web designers. I am sort of a freelancer myself. One thing that I’d say that most freelancers tend to forget is to protect themselves legally from unscrupulous clients.
I had the pleasant experience of riding on gentleman’s agreement for most of my freelance work until I’ve personally experience one totally unmanageable client a few years ago, who, despite verbal agreements that there would only be a maximum of two revisions from an agreed design, pushed me on to make more than the agreed revisions. While I was able to assert myself over the matter, I knew that I would have had better leverage if I had the agreement on paper.
If you’re a freelancer and have experienced the same, then it’s quite obvious where you (we) have lapsed - we forgot to protect ourselves legally.
While lawsuits are not that common with freelance jobs (since most companies only outsource vital tasks to more established companies), it is still a wise move to be protected by a duly-signed agreement.
Depending on the nature of the job, you might need a set of legal forms that would guide you from the moment you’ve started officially talking to the client. While verbal agreements can stand in court, there’s no better protection than paper.
Here are some of the more common documents that you should have.
  • Quotation
  • Job specification sheet
  • Copyright and release forms
  • Final contract/agreement
  • Billing statement
  • Non-disclosure agreement
  • Privacy agreement

Four Tips to a Winning Attitude Towards Your Career

Is it important to you that you become successful in your chosen career? Many people take their jobs for granted, thinking that their job is taking over their lives and all that drama. This kind of attitude will not lead you to becoming the successful professional you always dreamed yourself to be. Realize what it takes to be the very best in whatever you do.
Be ready to face challenges. Bad things happen and that’s just the truth. How many times have you been disappointed and hurt because of unexpected pain and frustration? That’s just how it is. In all your endeavors, you will either pass of fail, and the only thing you can do about it is to try until you pass.
Everyone makes mistakes. But the more important thing is not to make the same mistake twice. Later on in your life you will look back at all the challenges you have successfully overcome and you will realize how strong you have become.
Realize your potential. Early on in your life you should be aware of the things you have which you can use to reach your goals. Don’t let your talents go to waste. Realize what you can do and go ahead and do it if you know it can improve your life and the lives of people around you. Acknowledge those things you cannot do and love yourself despite that weakness.
Think positive. Don’t be a person who is easily defeated by rejection. Some people have worse luck than others. The key is to think that you can always make something out of your life. And that you can always pave your own way to your dreams. So what if you have to work hard for your goals? Be proud that you are building the foundations of your own dream.

Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

Storms and hurricanes. Tornadoes and thunderstorms. Floods and ManBearPig. Anything can happen these days. If you happen to live where such occurrences are quite common, you just have to be prepared for them. One thing you can do to help you survive disasters is to stock up on emergency supplies. The rule of thumb is to have at least supplies to last you four days. If you happen to have a storm shelter, make sure it’s well stocked. Here’s a checklist to guide you on things to stock up on.
  • Fresh drinking water (at least three gallons per person)
  • Battery operated transistor radio
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit (here’s how to pack a first aid kit)
  • Canned goods
  • Special food items (e.g. baby formula)
  • A camping stove
  • Can opener
  • Disposable utensils
  • Canned juices (replenishes nutrients and sugars, and hydrates)
  • Large zip top bags/Garbage bags
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Waterproof matches
  • Candles
  • Sleeping bags (or roll-up mattresses with blankets)
As another rule of thumb check your supplies monthly and replace items that can go stale or bad.

How to Be More Creative

Believe it or not, any person can be creative in his or her own special way. Not everyone can be a master artist, or a writer but one can sure find ways in expressing one’s creativity. Hey, even telling jokes is an art form so why not try to be good at it.
Here are a few tips on how to be more creative.
Experiment and Explore
Not just because you got low grades in your art appreciation classes, you wouldn’t even dare touch a piece of crayon again. Try other media. Sing. Dance. Act. Write a poem. A story. You’d never know until you try them all out. And even if you suck the first time, that’s not a guarantee that you won’t be good at it.
Set a Goal
Aimlessly doing things is not the way to go. The lack of focus usually leads to zero output. Try to set a goal for yourself. Gauge it to see if it’s attainable, even rank it based on difficulty. Check out the pros and cons (every goal has one). Creativity starts at deciding to do one thing even if it has some points that go against it.
Be in Tune with Your Mood
Some writer friends claim that they write best when angry (or drunk!) but that doesn’t mean that you have to be angry. There’s a way to psyche oneself up. Most of them just think about those things that they hate (nothing extreme) to get in the zone.
Well, for most, we can always just think of that one mood that keeps us going. Then, when we’re mentally and emotionally inline with that, then we’d be in that “zone” where we think and feel best to produce.
Find Your Special Place
We all have special places where we’re most creative. As for me, anywhere quiet does the trick. Maybe it’s a room. Your home office. Under a tree. Your garage. The basement. It may not even be a special maybe it’s just your desk arranged in a certain way. Or working with music on. A friend even works best with jelly-filled donuts.
Just create the environment that helps your mood. Geniuses always have their own workshop.
Learn the Tools and Tricks
Getting to your goal means that you have the right tools for the work. A writer should have a word processor (or the good old typewriter, or even pen and paper), a dictionary, and a thesaurus. Traditional artists who paint should have a good set of brushes. So whatever field you may want to explore, you need to master tools and certain techniques. Maybe in the process create your own. Now that’s creativity in the process!
Commit Yourself
This means no distractions and no quitting. Just you, your tools, and your goal.
If in Doubt, Take a Break
Most creative work doesn’t happen overnight. If you feel like you’re entering a slump in your 3rd or 4th hour of work, take a break and rest. You still have the next day or other days to work on it once you’re in the zone again.

How to Choose Matching Colors (Plus a Mac OS X Widget)

Not all of us may be gifted with that artistic sense. Choosing colors is an art but at least for us art commoners, we can approach it as a science. Knowing what colors go well together goes a long way - choosing paint for your house, picking wallpaper and accents, even with designing your website. Choosing colors that match would at least make things look a bit better, even if you’re not a certified art ace.
If you never paid attention to art appreciation/theory classes (if you ever had any), then this web-based tool is just for you. Color Jack: Sphere is a tool that lets you choose matching colors based on different color schemes. You can choose from schemes like analogous, complementary, split-complementary, triadic, up to six-tone schemes. You can manually pick the colors and the color wheel will adjust automatically for you choosing the best colors for your scheme.
What makes this tool just even better, is that you can choose settings fordifferent types of color blindness. More plus points for letting you choose from the normal spectrum to web-safe colors.
Now from better to best - it lets you export your generated scheme to differentswatches applications like Photoshop or Illustrator.
Visit Color Jack: Sphere here.
It’s also a downloadable widget for Mac OS X! Great for designers. I recommended this to two artist friends of mine and it’s become staples to their dashboard.
Download the widget here.
PS: Another site, ColorBlender offers much of the same except that it doesn’t recommend schemes for color blindness (Accessibility is the thing today!) . You might want to visit ColorBlender if you want a tool that matches for Pantone colors.

How To Pack a Healthy Picnic Lunch

Healthy Food for Picnic Time

One of the most popular activities in the summer  is to be outdoors and enjoy a picnic with the family. This article is about how to pack a healthy picnic lunch.  This article includes suggestions for food you can take, quick salads to prepare, and tips about food safety.

A park is the most convenient place to have a picnic. Most have tables, which make it easier to eat and serve the food, particularly if you are using plates and utensils. Many people  have folding chairs and even small tables they can take in the car, but this isn't always possible if you do not have much space. A more casual gathering may involve taking a blanket and eating on the ground.  Generally kids prefer this to picnic tables anyway.

A beach is another great place to have a picnic lunch although they are often quite crowded, particularly on hot days.  Food safety is always important and we need to have good habits to prevent illness.   If you have ever gotten sick from eating food you know how terrible it feels.   Read on for tips on packing healthy food for your outdoor lunch.

Food Safety Tips
The most important thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the food that we typically eat at a picnic will spoil very quickly. Bacteria will multiply rapidly in most food when it is at room temperature, and it grows even faster  on a hot day.

You cannot always know if something is still safe to eat. Of course, it will become obvious eventually. However, people get sick sometimes from eating something that tasted and smelled fine . This is why food safety is so important when packing a healthy picnic lunch.

Our hands normally contain a lot of bacteria. Bringing along a waterless hand cleaner is a good idea, unless you are going to be somewhere that has public washrooms.

Food must be kept cold, and the best way to do this is to carry a cooler. Anything that normally requires refrigeration at home should be kept cold until you will eat. Leftovers should be put away soon after eating. This is easy to forget when we are having fun and visiting with others, but it only takes a minute to repack in a cooler.  It may seem obvious, but toxins will multiply fast and you may not even be aware of it.

If you are taking raw meat to cook on a barbecue, it should be kept separate from other food. If you are taking a lot of meat, the safest option is to pack that in a separate cooler and use another cooler for other food.

Meat should be well wrapped and in a ziplock bag, or a container with a tight lid, so that any juices that may leak will not end up on other food. Use separate utensils for handing the raw meat when you are barbecuing, and not the same ones you will be using to eat your meal. Raw meat has a lot of bacteria.

Planning a Healthy Lunch For the Picnic

A healthy lunch should include protein as well as lots of vegetables, and some fruit. Protein with each meal helps to keep the blood sugar at a good level.  This will keep you from  feeling hungry  not long after eating. Besides meat and fish, protein is in eggs, cheese and yogurt. The salad pictured here is a filling meal, as it has eggs and ham.

However, you don't need to eat meat or dairy to get protein. Other sources include beans, quinoa, tofu, yogurt (particularly Greek yogurt)  and nuts. Raw almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts all add nice favor to salads, or can be eaten by themselves. Seeds such as pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds are good choices as well.

Once you have decided on a protein food, you will want to include lots of vegetables. You may wish to cut up raw veggies and eat them with a dip or salad dressing. There are endless possibilities as far as salads are concerned. Almost any vegetable can be eaten raw, and is better for you than cooked as no nutrition is lost. There are lots of varieties of lettuce. The darker it is in color, the more antioxidants and vitamins it contains. You also may want to use spinach or other greens. You will get a lot of vitamins and minerals and fiber with these foods.

Cooked pasta, potatoes and rice can be used as well to make salads.  Red and yellow potatoes are particularly nice to make a salad.

Almost everyone loves fruit, and it has a lot of nutrition. One nice thing about summer is  fruit is in season and can be obtained fresh from farmers markets. It's delicious and great for growing and active kids to eat.

For dessert, you could bring homemade cookies, yogurt or raisins, just to give a few examples.

Some Quick Food Ideas
Quinoa

Quinoa is delicious in a salad. Combine cooked quinoa with cooked squash, sliced zucchini, cherry tomatoes, or other raw veggie that you like. Add parsley, basil or other fresh herb and toss with a vinaigrette.

Pasta

Cooked pasta goes well with tomatoes, cucumber, shredded carrot. It's particularly nice with a sun dried tomato or Italian dressing.

Beans

Beans are healthy and have protein. A variety of your favorites with a zesty vinaigrette will provide a lot of nutrition, and they are a good source of fiber as well.

Eggs

Add more flavor to cooked eggs by cutting in half and sprinkling with paprika and pepper.

Samon and tuna

Canned salmon or tuna can be packed in containers and eaten as is, or with a bun or bread to make sandwiches. Simply mash, add onion and flavorings that you like and just enough mayo to combine. If you use a lot of mayo it will get too wet and a bit mushy.

Finger Foods for Kids

Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon are all popular items to eat at a picnic. I find it a lot easier to take these items whole, and cut them up just before eating them. They spoil quickly once cut, and even if kept cold they don't taste as good as when eaten fresh.

Watermelon is healthy and has almost no calories, and it is one fruit that almost everyone loves, especially kids.

Kids love finger foods, and there are many healthy ones. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, broccoli florettes, grapes and cherries are some great choices. Finger foods are handy to have around for snacks, particularly if you plan to be gone for several hours.

Items to Pack for a Picnic
Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to eat and realizing you forgot something important. One thing you may need to include is a manual can opener. You may want to take a can of salmon, for example, and prepare it when you arrive at your destination.

You may also need a bottle opener. You don't want to take a bottle of wine with you, only to discover you can't open it.

Condiments may be necessary if you are going to make sandwiches. Mustard, mayo, ketchup. pickles or pickle relish are items that a lot of people like to have.

You also probably will need utensils of some kind, depending on what you are eating, as well as plates. A knife may be necessary to cut up anything that wasn't prepared ahead of time at home.

Many people use paper plates and plastic knives, forks and spoons so they won't have dirty dishes to take home. This makes it easier and more convenient if you don't want to do dishes when you get home.

If you are taking your own coffee or tea, don't forget mugs. You may need glasses for juice or soda unless you don't mind drinking right from the container.

There are other things you might need that have nothing to do with food when eating outside. These would include a large blanket, folding chairs that fit into the trunk of the car, bug spray, and sunscreen.

Napkins and towels are a must. Hands can get sticky eating fruit like watermelon, peaches and so on. Taking some hand wipes or waterless hand cleaner are convenient when you are outdoors.

5 Shopping Trip Tips

Ever had one of those unfortunate accident where your tub of ice cream melted in the car because you got caught in a traffic jam on a hot summer afternoon? Here are some shopping trip tips for you:
  • If you have spare cooler, you might want to bring one along to store your frozen items.
  • Purchase frozen foods last so they won’t be exposed to changes in temperature. That might spoil them.
  • One trick stores do is to place brand name items at eye-level since they’re a bit pricier. You might score on value if you look at other levels of the shelves.
  • Beware of bundled items. You might be paying the same price or even more. And chances are you don’t need that much. Or in cases of two different products, you might not need the other one.
  • Plain and simple. Keep (and follow!) a grocery list.

Microwave Cooking Tips

Last time I wrote about microwaving, I wrote about safety tips. Here are some tips on actually using you microwave to cook.
  • Check the cookbook that comes with your microwave - If you plan to microwave you dish, find similar dishes to determine cooking time, dish size and proportions.
  • Liquids in dishes extends cooking time - You can reduce the liquid by half of what is needed in a conventional recipe.
  • Herbs, salts and seasoning - Microwaving intensifies flavors of dried herbs, pepper, and seasoning so you need to reduce the use. Likewise, since less liquid is used, you need to cut back on salt too. However, this is different with fresh herbs. Since they contain liquid, it takes time before the flavors fuse out so you might want to increase them in your recipe.
  • Garlic cooks out quickly in microwave.

How to Start a Podcast (Hardware and Software)

I’m not really a sound engineering but I like audio. I did a few mixes myself and done some voice acting. I still play the guitar when I can. And if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from all of that, talent is one thing, but equipment counts. I’ve done some personal recordings using a cheap headset microphone and as a novice, found them okay. But as soon as I got to try out pro audio stuff, I realized that quality doesn’t come cheap.
And for aspiring podcasters, you really have to invest on some equipment if you want to have a quality cast, not one filled with hisses and pops and varying volume levels. So here are my takes on a starter set-up (emphasis on “starter”).
Hardware
Given that you have a computer which has a sound card with a line-in jack or a PC with USB ports, all you need to add are some other hardware, particularly a microphone setup. I hope I wouldn’t be too technical with what I’ll be writing. And here are my picks:
  • Microphone - There are two types of microphone in the market today. Recording studios mostly have condenser microphones which uses a capacitor. They have a very broad range and can really capture the softest of sounds. It also uses a heap of juice. Most of the microphones we have (including desktop mics) are dynamic microphones. These use magnetic fields to capture sound. They’re a lot cheaper than condensers.
Now there are a lot of mics out there but you may want to try a dynamic microphone. One brand, Shure, is a trusted one for pro audio. They’ve got theSM58 to get you started.
  • Pop Filter - Yes, the English language aspirates the “p”s as an initial sound. The effect? They pop in recordings because of the gush of air. To combat that, you might need a pop filter. OnScreen has some good ones. Or you can even build your own.
  • Mixers - Mixers get your sound levels right even before reaching you computer. Now this maybe the most expensive piece in the set-up. Some people try to skip this and do the tweaks post-recording, but believe me, mixers make a big difference.
Now everyone’s been hyping on Behringer mixers and for good reason. They’re quite great for the value (it’s cheaper!). And if . I recommend either the UB802.
You have an assortment of inputs going to your computer. The most typical would be to connect to your line-in. But many mixers today now have USB or firewire connectivity. I suggest getting the USB.
  • Headset - You may have great speakers but nothing beats getting to hear details better than a good headset. Now Sennheiser have a great range of headphones for you. You can try out ones listed under home entertainment, they work quite well for simple editing. Behringer’s got some good ones too.
  • Packages - Heck what’s the point me writing a lengthy piece if you can get it out of the box right? Anyway, assembly’s one thing that I believe any novice should experience. If you want to get started right away, some pro audio manufacturers bundle everything for you. Behringer has some starter sets that include the mixer, mic, headset and input control.
Software
Now with the hardware settled, we now go into software:
  • Editing - Hands down I’ll put in Audacity which has versions for both Mac and Windows. It’s free (better than paying for Sony Sound Forge or Adobe Audition) and it does the job. It records, it cuts, copies, splices… For a list of complete features click here.
  • Instant Audio Tweaks - This one I got from Blogging Pro - The Levelator. It effectively evens out audio levels within a file by having a compressor, normalizer or limiter within it.
  • If anyone can suggest a better set-up pray do tell!
Thanks to the Blogging Pro for some of the ideas.

How to Apply Caulk

Caulk can be used for common patch repairs at home. The most common patching work would be walls, tiles, and window seams. Over time, due to the exposure to varying temperatures, gaps can form from glass and windows and wood and gypsum boards. These loose seems can even cost you more for heating and . Now caulk can be your quick remedy.
There are two types of caulk, latex and silicone. Latex can be used to fill ininterior works. It’s very versatile and painters love it. Silicone is like a rubber seal best for waterproofing and heating/cooling issues. You can use it on clean metal, glass, masonry, and even painted woods. It comes in different colors too.

How to Save Up on Shampoo

Believe it or not, shampoo bottles are costing you a fortune. Having a large one up for everyone’s use can alter expected consumption especially when you have kids at home. Yup, they love to slather it on. And using too much shampoo doesn’t really do you any better.
Here’s one quick tip to avoid such unnecessary use. Use pump-type dispenserslike those use for hand soaps/sanitizers. Buy shampoo in bulk and transfer just enough into the dispenser. Now you can tell the kids to just use a certain amount (like on pump for short hair, and two pumps for long hair).

How to Survive a Small Blast

Accidents can happen or perhaps, freak coincidence. What are the chances of meeting some loony guy with a grenade. A small blast is not something to joke about. These pointers became popular post 9-11 tragedy.
Here are some pointers on how to survive a small blast:
  • Try to gun for the exit - Only if you’re near or next to it.
  • Grenades have some 3-4 seconds minimum lapse once triggered - This would give you ample time to do some of the following steps.
  • Find some cover - If you can, find a thick concrete cover. If you can’t…
  • Lie down feet towards the blast, head pointing away - This will make you a small target for the blast shock and shrapnel. You may lose your legs but at least you’re alive
  • Pin your upper arms along your sides - Protect your vital organs!
  • Cover your ears - The blast or shockwave may blow your eardrums.
I just hope that you’d never have to use these tips. But paranoia helps, sometimes.
Want to see something cool, here’s how to survive an atomic blast. I don’t know if this could work. But who knows?

Mac Tips: Alternative to Pricey Software

Windows users have an assortment of freeware and FOSS alternatives to choose from. Unfortunately for Mac users, there’s quite a shortage to that.
Anyway, here are a few alternative choices to pricey software for the Mac:
  • Pixel Image Editor ($39) for Photoshop ($649)
  • Lineform ($79.95) for Adobe Illustrator ($499)
  • Billings 2 ($59) for Quickbooks ($250)
  • NVU (FREE!) + BBEdit ($30) for Adobe Dreamweaver ($350)
Check what features you really use and need. Definitely not all of these cheaper software will deliver the same bang as the pricey ones but they could be enough for you to finish work without spending much!

Pepper Spray First Aid

I’ve never been pepper sprayed and thank goodness I’ve never been. Some wannabe Jackass cast member friends of mine tried it out once and they swear they don’t want to be sprayed again. Must be some smartening experience, huh?
But if you’re unfortunate to be sprayed accidentally, here are first aid steps topepper spray exposure (unless you’re a mugger and you probably deserve it):
  • Don’t panic.
  • Calm the patient.
  • Expose the patient to fresh air. A fan can also be used.
  • Call for emergency medical personnel if available.
  • Flush affected areas with lots of cool water.
  • Clean the affected area with non-oil-based soap.
  • If eyes are exposed, flush with cool, fresh water or sterile saline solution for 15 minutes.
  • Remove contaminated clothing and contact lenses.
  • If assisting, wear rubber gloves to prevent contamination.
  • If any irritation or pain persists, consult your medical practitioner.
