Gazza's secret agony: Part 2
By Phil Taylor
FOOTBALL legend Paul Gascoigne last night revealed it's not just his health that's giving him trouble —it's his sex life too.
Still looking frail after the bout of pneumonia that almost killed him, the former hell-raising England star revealed: "I haven't slept with a woman for 15 months.
"The last time I had sex was before I finally split with my wife Sheryl in September 2003.
"I hardly go out now. Of course I miss being in a relationship and having a woman next to me in bed at night. But I'm very wary because of past experience."
Paul, 37, then blasted cruel rumour-mongers who this week claimed he had Aids as he recovered from his nine-day hospital nightmare.
"I've definitely NOT got Aids," he insisted. "The doctors gave me every test going. I'm fine. These stories are unbelievable. I've been called a fat b****** for 15 years by away supporters.
"Then I give up booze, drugs and junk food, lose a bit of weight and people suggest I've got Aids. It's absolutely sickening and I'm going to sue the paper that printed it." Gazza bared his soul as he unveiled a secret three-step plan to find happiness AND end the celibacy—a new home, a new wife and another baby. "I can see a day when Paul Gascoigne marries again—definitely," he told us. "And I'd like more children.
"I want to get my own house and fill it with things I like. I just have to be 120 per cent sure it's with the right woman. It's hard for me.
"There's been so many lies printed about me a woman would probably think twice if she wanted to go out with me. And I don't blame her."
Wicked
Then the controversial star's wicked sense of fun returned as he added: "At the end of the day if I wanted a **** I could just go down to a brothel and pay £25 for it. But I never have. I'm too good-looking for that!"
The first move in Gazza's bid for new happiness comes next week when he goes to court to try to get Sheryl's maintenance reduced.
In the 1999 divorce settlement Sheryl got a £660,000 lump sum, their £300,000 home, cars worth £85,000 and £10,000 a month for her, their eight-year-old son Regan and her two children from her first marriage. The monthly payouts have been cut once to £5,500 but now Gazza's lucrative soccer career has come to an end he wants it reduced further.
"I just want to settle it once and for all and start again with a clean slate," he said.
"I don't regret marrying Sheryl. I just regret getting divorced. But I don't feel love for her any more. That's all gone. Now I'm ready to move on."
Recalling how his ex didn't even send a get-well card during his hospital ordeal—exclusively revealed by us last Sunday—Paul added: "Sheryl may be bitter—but I ain't bitter about anything. To learn in life you have to make mistakes.
"Now it's all down to the judge and lawyers. Once it's settled I want to buy a big house in the country, with a lake where I can go fishing. One of my biggest regrets is that I haven't seen more of my son Regan.
"But with my own house he'll be able to visit me."
Gazza admits he was glad to see the back of 2004—a year that brought a car smash, a perforated ulcer and pneumonia. "I keep thinking ‘It can't get any worse,' and then it does," he said. But 2004 also brought one of the happiest times of his life— taking son Regan to Disneyland Paris in November.
"To see the joy on his face, and just be with him was absolutely wonderful," said Paul.
"Regan doesn't like football, though. He prefers ballet and is so good—just like Billy Elliot.
"But he's cleverer than me. Once I told him, ‘It's a bit weird to be a ballet dancer, son.'
Upset
"He said, ‘No Dad. You're weird. You get in the shower with guys every weekend. I get to pick up women by the hips!'"
At the moment Gazza lives in mate Jimmy "Five Bellies" Gardner's £50,000 flat in Gateshead— a world away from the luxury homes of his glittering career.
The midfielder became a global star in the 1990 World Cup and earned £2.6million a year. He played for Newcastle Utd, Spurs, Lazio and Glasgow Rangers. "I've blown millions," admitted Gazza. "But I haven't blown everything. I'm financially secure for the rest of my life."
When his marriage folded, 37-year-old Sheryl had reason to be upset. It collapsed after a drunken Gazza beat her up.
But despite all the problems Sheryl gave Paul one last chance on a romantic holiday to Spain in August 2003—but they split for good a month later.
And last July—after Gazza published his autobiography—she hit back with a blistering attack in Hello! magazine. Paul admits it hurt. "It's upsetting but what can I do?" he sighed. "I'm proud to be Paul Gascoigne and even prouder to be Gazza. I've made a lot of people happy. Now my dream is for ME to be happy.
"My life is getting better. But there are a few pieces missing.
"Hopefully this year I'll discover those pieces and find true happiness."
