New Pictures Taking a daily aspirin causes the risk of major bleeding to increase by 43 per cent, study claims

TAKING a daily aspirin raises the risk of deadly bleeds by nearly 50 per cent, a study reveals.

Millions of Brits regularly use the painkiller to slash their chances of heart attacks and strokes.

King’s College London researchers found taking it as a preventative treatment does help cut deadly cardiac events by 11 per cent.

But it caused risk of major bleeding events to rocket by 43 per cent. It means one in 200 people treated with aspirin suffered a serious bleed.

The 2p-a-day painkiller is thought to make the blood less sticky. Experts estimate 40 per cent of pensioners take aspirin daily – half of these as a precaution against heart problems.

But scientists warn the latest evidence suggests the risks do not outweigh the harms for those with a healthy ticker.

Lead researcher, Dr Sean Zheng, said: “There is insufficient evidence to recommend routine aspirin use in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths in people without cardiovascular disease.

“This study shows that while cardiovascular events may be reduced in these patients, these benefits are matched by an increased risk of major bleeding events.

We have known for many years that there are risks and side effects involved with its long-term use

“Aspirin use requires discussion between the patient and their physician, with the knowledge that any small potential cardiovascular benefits are weighed up against the real risk of severe bleeding.”

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analysed 13 trials including nearly 165,000 patients.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said healthy Brits should not take aspirin.

He said: “This large study confirms what we already know. Current guidelines do not recommend aspirin for people who don’t already have heart and circulatory diseases.

“This is because, while aspirin reduces these people’s risk of heart attacks and strokes, any benefit is outweighed by an increased risk of bleeding.

“If you have a heart attack, your doctor will usually prescribe a daily aspirin to try and prevent a second attack. In this case, the reduced risk of a second life-threatening heart attack substantially outweighs the risk of side effects, such as bleeding.”

Previous research has found long-term aspirin use almost halves the risk of dying from three common cancers. British trials show it cuts fatal bowel, throat and stomach tumours.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: “Aspirin can be an inexpensive and effective drug for reducing risks of recurrence in patients who have suffered a stroke or heart attack, but we have known for many years that there are risks and side effects involved with its long-term use, and this study highlights the importance of managing its use carefully and effectively.

“It is important that this research is considered as clinical guidelines are updated and developed, in the best interests of our patients.”
