New Pictures National Television Awards 2019

Bodyguard scooped Best New Drama and This Morning received their ninth prize for Best Daytime as the 2019 National Television Awards kicked off at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday night.

Taking to the stage to accept their prize hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield thanked viewers for voting for them yet again, with both also saying how much they 'adored' one another.

This came as Bodyguard scooped the coveted Best New Drama after breaking ratings records earlier this year, and as the crew took to the stage they thanked showrunner Jed Mercurio.

In their speech Phil said: 'We never take it for granted we love our family our This Morning family, the viewers that watch it are our family,' and turning to Holly he added: 'And I absolutely adore working with you.'

Holly then said: 'I am a very very lucky lady to have you in my life every single day. This is a special year it's 30 years and still you vote and you enjoy the show means everything to us, without you this show would not be possible.'

It now remains to be seen whether the duo will once again present Wednesday's This Morning in a hungover state, as they have in previous years to the delight of viewers.

After This Morning's honour, the next prize was for Best Soap Newcomer, which in a historical moment was given to Emmerdale's James Moore, who received a piggyback to the stage.

He said: 'Thank you so much this means the world to us, a year ago I never thought I'd be here, and for Emmerdale to take on someone with a disability shows the progression we need in this day and age. This means the world to me.'

The show then descended into chaos as David Walliams was awarded Best TV Judge for the third time, and as the camera cut to the Britain's Got Talent auditions in London, he was piled on by his fellow judges.

Simon - outraged at the loss - pressed his panel's red buzzers, leading David to proclaim that the award was 'all mine!'

This came after Paul O'Grady scooped yet another award for Best Factual Programme for his heartwarming For The Love Of Dogs, beating out Gogglebox, Ambulance, DIY SOS and The Great British Bake Off.

Thanking the shows large crew and the volunteers at Battersea Dogs Home, the veteran presenter also gave thanks to the dogs 'for allowing us to film them.'

After a hilarious skit featuring Dermot's frantic journey to the ceremony - with the help of Bodyguard's David Budd - the show opened with an appropriately 'fabulous' performance from John Barrowman.

The National Television Awards mark one of the most exciting nights in British TV, with faces from reality, scripted drama and comedy, soaps and quiz shows hoping to scoop a gong.

Held at London's O2, 2019's shortlist sees the likes of Killing Eve, Bodyguard and The Cry battle it out as some of the most talked-about new shows of the past 12 months.

Other nominated newbies include Robbie Williams for his maiden turn as an X Factor judge, and Jodie Whittaker for her incarnation of Doctor Who - the first time a woman has ever played the role.

Jodie will battle it out against the likes of Killing Eve leading ladies Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, as well as Bodyguard stars Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes.

These shows crop up in the fledgling New Drama category, freshly launched this year.

In the Best TV Judge category, David Walliams, Louis Tomlinson, Judge Rinder and Simon Cowell will square off against Robbie.

Hilarious: Dermot also opened the show with a funny sketch, rushing to get to the awards show on time with the help of Richard Madden as David Budd

As is the case every year, the UK's favourite soaps - Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks - will be pitted against one another in the Serial Drama category.

Soap actors Bonnie Langford, Danny Dyer, Emma Atkins, Jack P Shepherd and Lucy Pargeter are all gunning for the Serial Drama Performance gong.

Also a recurring fixture, Dermot O Leary will present the ceremony - with last year's Love Island winners Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer hosting the backstage reactions.

In what is perhaps a shock to some, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly are nominated for the Best Presenters category - a prize they have taken home every year since 2001.

The pair, however, have spent the majority of the past 12 months apart professionally, thanks to Ant's recovery from pain killer addiction. Dec continued his work on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! without Ant - yet they are up for an award as a twosome.

Ant will return to these shows in 2019 however.

The annual Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award will see both Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! fight All Round To Mrs Brown's, Love Island and The Graham Norton Show for perhaps the most prestigious accolade of the evening.

The Comedy category features several shows that have either aired or are currently airing their last ever seasons this year: Benidorm, Peter Kay's Car Share and The Big Bang Theory. They will be up against Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father and Mrs Brown's Boys.
