New Pictures You CAN’T be fined for not wearing a seat belt while reversing your car – all the times you don’t need to buckle up

EVERY driver knows just how important it is to buckle up when behind the wheel.

If you or your passengers aren’t wearing a seat belt when required, you could be fined up to £500.

But there are certain times when motorists are legally allowed to drive without a seat belt on.

And while you should always use a restraint during regular driving to remain as safe as possible, there are a few situations that mean you can’t be fined for not wearing one.

British taxi drivers are one group exempt from wearing a seat belt while carrying passengers in their vehicle, while you don’t need to be clipped in when you are reversing.

When don’t I need to wear a seat belt?

According to the Gov website, drivers are exempt from wearing a seat belt under a few strict conditions.

These apply if you are:

  • A driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing

  • In a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services

  • A passenger in a trade vehicle and you’re investigating a fault

  • Driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that’s travelling no more than 50 metres between stops

  • a licensed taxi driver who is ‘plying for hire’ or carrying passengers

Are there medical exemptions?

Some motorists are medically exempt from wearing a seat belt.

But you must have an official document from your doctor stating you don’t have to wear one for medical reasons.

You must keep your ‘Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing’ with you at all times while driving, and are required to show it to police when requested.

You must also inform your insurer if you are issued with one of the certificates, as it may affect your policy.

What about pregnant or disabled drivers?

The law requires both pregnant and disabled drivers to wear a seat belt at all times on the road.

The only time an exemption applies is if a doctor decides you shouldn’t buckle up for medical reasons.

You’ll also need to be issued with a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing’.

What are the rules for children?

The law outlines strict rules on how children must be restrained in the car.

Most children are required to use a car seat until the age of 12.

See our full guide to child car seat laws here.

The law states: “You must wear a seat belt if one is fitted in the seat you’re using – there are only a few exceptions.

“You’re also only allowed one person in each seat fitted with a seat belt.

“You can be fined up to £500 if you don’t wear a seat belt when you’re supposed to.”
