THE 2019 Academy Awards are set for a major revamp following the news that last year’s ceremony was the lowest-rated telecast on record.
Here’s everything you need to know about nominations and how you can watch the ceremony…
When are the Oscars 2019?
The Oscars 2019, or the 91st Academy Awards will be held on February 24, 2019. The event will be broadcast on Sky, and will also be viewable on NOW TV with a Sky cinema pass.
In an official announcement, the Academy announced that the following year the awards will be brought forward to February 9, 2020.
They also revealed the introduction of a new category designed around achievement in popular film as well as a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.
The 2018 awards was hosted for a second time by Jimmy Kimmel but the furore surrounding the Harvey Weinstein allegations perhaps contributed to the ceremony’s lowest-rated telecast.
What date are the Oscars 2019 nominations announced?
The Academy will announce the nominations for the Oscars TODAY (Tuesday, January 22, 2019) at around 1.20pm.
The Academy is a 6,000-strong group made up of film industry professionals such as actors, directors and producers – making the awards stand-out against shows such as the Golden Globes as it is a vote by the nominees’ peers.
In order to submit a film for a nomination, a movie’s producer or distributor must sign and submit an Official Screen Credits form in early December that also proves the film meets the criteria.
The ballots are then sent out and voting members are allowed to select up to five nominees, ranked in order of preference.
Only actors get to select nominees for acting categories and likewise with directors. However, when it comes to the Best Picture category, everyone is allowed to submit a vote.
