Grilling Recipe Ideas to Add to your Grilling Repertoire

Want a change from the traditional hot dogs and hamburgers? Here are a few different grilling ideas!
Anything that can be cooked on the stove or in an oven can be grilled on a gas or charcoal grill. Cooking preparation and times will be different, and sometimes a little different cooking technique will have to be used. Hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks and chicken are grilling staples, but if you cook out a lot, you will want to try cooking some different foods. Let’s explore a few grilling recipe ideas.

Grilled Pizza
Have you ever had grilled pizza? It is one of many grilling recipe ideas you will love to grill, and your guests will love to eat. Prepare your pizza dough as you always do, or you may decide to use a prepared pizza crust. If you are cooking on charcoal, do not put the pizza on the grill until the coals are white.

When the dough is ready, brush one side with vegetable oil and put that side down on the grill first. If your grill has a cover, put the cover down for about 30 seconds to distribute the heat. If you are cooking on an uncovered grill, cover the pizza with a disposable aluminum pan or a tent of aluminum foil. When the bottom is golden brown, brush oil on the top of the dough and flip over. Add your sauce and toppings and let cook until the toppings are bubbling and melting into oozy goodness. Remove from the grill and let cool for a minute or two before eating.

Grilled Shrimp in Beer Influenced Marinade
Grilled shrimp is a great appetizer or main course. Shrimp fresh out of the water can be ugly buggers, but once they are grilled; they just might be the best looking food on the table.

To make the Marinade, mix the following ingredients in a bowl:

2 cups of your favorite light beer
2 tablespoons chopped scallions
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
2 teaspoons dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper, ground or cracked
When the marinade ingredients are thoroughly mixed, add 2 pounds shrimp, shelled and deveined and mix until shrimp is evenly coated. Refrigerate overnight, if possible, or at least 4 hours. When it is time to cook the shrimp, remove the shrimp from the marinade. Thread the shrimp on skewers and grill on hot coals or a gas grill for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, basting the shrimp with the remaining marinade. Remove from grill and let cool for a minute or two before eating. The shrimp can be grilled without the benefit of skewers, if desired.

Barbeque Bratwurst
Barbeque bratwurst is a tasty alternative to the traditional hot dog. Buy or make your favorite barbecue sauce. You will need approximately ½ cup for every 4 bratwurst. Marinade the brats in the barbecue sauce for at least four hours. When the brats are ready for the grill, remove the brats from the sauce and cook on a hot grill for about 8 to 10 minutes, turning as necessary.

Serve on a grilled bun and add chopped onions and peppers or tangy mustard, if desired. An alternative to marinating the brats is to inject the brats with the barbecue sauce and grill for 8 to 10 minutes.

Grilled Banana Split
Instead of toasting marshmallows, a fun grilling alternative is grilled banana splits. Provide at least one banana for each person. Cut the ends of the banana off and split the banana lengthwise but leave the banana in the peel. Pull the peel apart enough to add chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. Spray the aluminum foil with cooking spray and wrap each banana in the foil. Place the banana packets on a hot grill for a few minutes or long enough for the chocolate chips and marshmallows to melt. Remove the packets from the grill and unwrap the bananas. Remove the banana from the peel and top with your favorite ice cream. Add nuts, cherries and your favorite ice cream sauce. Eat and enjoy and undo your belt, if necessary.

Don't forget, it is possible to grill all year long no matter the weather!
