How To Go Freelance and Survive

Thinking of striking it out on your own? Wendy Boswell from Lifehacker looks at her own experience and provides some useful tips to would-be freelancers who want to be their own boss.
Put money away
Always have a safety net of spare cash to sustain your for at least 6 months before you venture off on your own. Settle all your credit card debts so you have piece of mind, or the interest rates will hang over your head.
Get insured
Because you are no longer going to be under the care of your company, make sure you look into insurance plans that will get you the most for your money. If personal agents don’t get you what you want, try trade associations for group insurance plans.
Manage yourself
Being on your own means you get to work how you want to work. You decide everything, so discipline is key. This also means learning to make sure you take time for yourself. This can be a problem when there is little separation between work and the office life, so learn to take some time off completely unrelated to work. Do something different, and challenge yourself with new projects to keep it interesting.
With all this in mind, you can take that next step feeling just that little bit more confident of your decision.
