Cliche as it is but potential is nothing if you don’t do anything about it. Even a person who doesn’t have the talent can achieve his success if he makes use of the opportunities that come his way. And so it is up to you to improve your life by getting out there, right where things are happening. Get out of the backstage and step into the limelight so you can expose yourself to get more opportunities.
Know what’s happening around you. Is there a social function which you should be attending? Various organizations hold social meetings, conferences, and seminars and events. Use these events as a chance for you to expand your network — meet new contacts so you can mingle with the who’s who in town. This is especially important for people in the business. Don’t pass up a good chance to meet people you can do business with. Dropping in some trade shows would also expose you to various organizations in different fields. No better way to make professional contacts.
The advantage of being visible is that you will be in the know of things which may or may not concern you. Like for example, there are certain job openings that are kept to a select few. And you’re more likely to get updated on inside information about a new project which you can win.
Don’t be limited by the things which you already know. I’ve known some people who passed on good job opportunities because they were scared of the unfamiliar responsibilities and are more comfortable doing what they already do. Sure, the familiar is comfortable; but you must understand that there is no improvement in refusing to learn new things. It’s understandable that you’re having doubts if you can excel in a new field, but if the offer is good and the benefits far outweigh the learning process, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give yourself the chance to improve your career.
If you’ll be in the job hunt, try to improve your online visibility. Post your resume and credentials on a personal website. I have had a lot of job offers arrive at my mailbox just by posting my resume online. Create accounts in job finder websites and professional networking sites (like LinkedIn). Many job hunters have turned to the internet to help them find the right people.
