How to Communicate with a Non-native English Speaker

Language is the best tool for communication. But it can also be the best barrier. Between two people who don’t speak the same language, communication can be a really complicated process. So how do you talk to someone who doesn’t speak your language? Learn these tips on how you can improve your communication process and see how the other person can understand you better.
Speak slowly and clearly. Try to pronounce every syllable. Non-native speakers of English find it hard to comprehend English words if they are not spoken clearly. Non-native speakers need you to be more articulate. Enunciate and try not to blabber because it creates confusion.
Refrain from using fillers. You may not notice it, but your sentence may not be exactly one smooth flow of English words grammatically linked to one another. Sometimes you insert syllables such as “um” or “er”. Avoid this because it makes your sentence less comprehensible.
Keep your sentence as short as possible without compromising the message you want to convey. The conversational type of speech is usually longer than needed if transcribed. Only say what you need to say.
Avoid using idioms and other expressions that require context. The non-native speaker will have difficulty understanding your idioms. Avoid using the slang and colloquial forms of words as well.
When the non-native speaker is trying to communicate but is having a hard time, help him by listening intently to what he’s saying. By listening intently, you are more likely to understand more and when the non-native speaker sees that you have understood him despite him having a hard time, he’ll be more encouraged to try harder.
