Spring may be around the corner but the cold doesn’t seem to let up everywhere else. And if you’re stuck home with a cold weather alert, nothing seems to beat a good book, your comfy chair and a mug of hot chocolate. There are a lot of hot chocolate recipes around (the Maya hot chocolate recipe even calls for chili), but we bring you some good old fashioned hot choco. Very much like granny makes it.
What you need:
- 1 cup (around 6 oz) of bittersweet chocolate
- 8 cups whole milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- cinnamon powder
- whipped cream
- knife
- mixing bowl
- saucepan
- wooden spoon
What to do:
- Using a chef’s knife, chop the chocolate into smaller pieces and place the pieces in a mixing bowl.
- Pour the milk into a saucepan. Heat over medium-low until you see wisps of steam.
- Add the sugar and vanilla extract to the milk until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Pour about a cup of the hot milk and sugar mixture onto the chocolate. As the chocolate melts, whisk to blend the chocolate.
- Continue adding the milk until everything has been fully integrated.
- Serve hot in mugs. For a bit of that Christmas-y aroma and taste, sprinkle a bit of cinnamon. And for a luscious treat, spritz on some whipped cream on top.
