Tips for Successful Plasma Donation

Plasma donation is a good deed that will put some money in your pocket as well: a win-win situation. Here's what you'll need to know before donating plasma.
How can you help someone in need and make money at the same time? By donating plasma, of course! Plasma donation is beneficial to both the donor and the recipient: you get a little extra cash in your pocket, and your plasma is used to make lifesaving therapies for people who desperately need them. It's good for you, great for those you help.
Once you've found a donation center, it's important to do your part to make your plasma donation goes as smoothly as possible. You can help the process along, and ensure the quality of the donated plasma, by doing the following both before and after your donation:
Stay Hydrated. There's no better way to get the plasma flowing freely than by drinking lots of water, beginning at least a day before your donation. If you can't stomach plain water, you can drink juice - but whatever you do, avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can actually dehydrate you even further. Drink at least 16 ounces of water immediately prior to donating, and then make sure to rehydrate afterward to help your body replace its lost fluids.
Don't Donate on Empty. You should eat a well-balanced meal before donating plasma so that your blood sugar levels are stabilized - but it's important to consider the kinds of foods you're eating, too.
Pile on the Protein. According to the CDC, adults need between 46 and 56 grams of protein daily. Getting adequate protein in your diet is important. Your protein levels will be checked before every plasma donation, and if they're not within acceptable levels, you won't be allowed to donate - so make sure you're getting enough.
Easy on the Fats. Each plasma donation is subjected to a battery of tests to check for infection before it is used to make medicines. If your blood is highly lipemic, or full of fat, it can negatively affect the result of these tests. The day prior to and the day of donation, avoid fried or fatty foods and processed carbs; instead, opt for whole-grain breads, lean meat such as poultry or fish, low-fat cheeses, fruits, vegetables, and broth-based soups.

Ingest Enough Iron. Low iron is one of the #1 reasons why potential plasma donors are turned away. Iron is essential in the manufacture of hemoglobin, a component of red blood cells that helps carry oxygen throughout the body. To make certain your iron levels are within an acceptable range, you should be getting between 8 and 18 grams of iron daily. Two or three weeks before donating plasma, pay close attention to your iron intake. Iron-rich foods include red meat, fish and poultry, watermelon, raisins, pumpkin seeds, spinach, eggs, and beans.
Grab Some Shut-Eye. Make sure you're getting a minimum of six hours of sleep the night before your plasma donation, so that your body is functioning optimally.
No Smoking Allowed! If you're a smoker, remember not to light up a cigarette for an hour prior or an hour after donating plasma. Smoking deprives your body of much-needed oxygen, and can contribute to feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness, or even increase your risk of fainting.
Plasma donation is a wonderful way to assist someone who really needs it - and in turn, pad your pockets with some extra money. By taking good care of yourself both before and after donation, you can make sure that the experience is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
