How to Know if You are Up for Freelance Work

One of the most brilliant ideas ever to solve the problem of going through all the trouble of employment is declaring oneself as a freelancer. Gone are the days when being a freelancer is a glorified non-regular employee. Nowadays, some freelancers who make it big earn more than regular employees. Know if you’re up for it.
When you’re a freelancer, you are your own boss. Just like an entrepreneur, being a freelancer means you have your own time, and a schedule which you impose on yourself. But here’s the catch. If you’re the type of person who can’t get the work done without supervision, then freelance might not be your thing. Freelancing is for people who can work efficiently even with zero supervision.
Freelancers can demand more payment. A regular employee is subject to the payroll terms of a company based on tenure, employee ranking, and many others, but a freelancer usually have a set fee which the interested company can either take it or leave it. If you’re really good, the company usually will “take it”.
On the other hand, a freelancer does not enjoy the benefits an employer bestows on the employees like health care, dental care, subsidies, and some other perks. A freelancer works alone, so there’s no real teamwork going on because you don’t work with your officemates on a regular basis.
There’s also the problem of an unsteady income. Since being a freelancer takes you out of a regular payroll, expect that there will be times when you’re out of a job. This shouldn’t be a problem if you’re the kind of person who can maintain a savings account.
There are lots of other pros and cons, but in the end, the decision will have to depend on how you love what you’re doing. Just like any other work, a person is driven to excellence when there’s passion. And when word comes out that you’re a real pro, then there’ll be lots of companies waiting in line for your services.
