Limerick mum's won the £79m lotto
By David O'Dornan
IRISH eyes were smiling last night after a Limerick mum of six scooped a monster £79million in the European lottery.
Jobless Dolores McNamara, 45, was in her local pub when the result came through—but then rushed to a nearby police station and begged officers to take her winning EuroMillions ticket for safekeeping.
They called her bank manager, who collected the ticket and opened up the bank to put it in the vault.
Dolores, who is married to Aidan, was said by neighbours to be staying in a hotel last night with her son, Dean, and other children.
Her neat £150,000 bungalow semi was deserted, but her eight-year-old Opel Astra was still parked outside.
Dolores had paid £3 at her neighbourhood shop in the Garryowen area of Limerick on Friday night for a "quick pick" lottery ticket.
Just an hour later, as she enjoyed a drink in The Track bar, she asked pal Pauline Greer to check her numbers, saying: "It's no use me doing it—I couldn't win an argument!"
Pauline said: "When Dolores realised she'd won she burst into tears. The rest of the place just erupted."
The £79.6million win made her instantly the 72nd richest person in Ireland and will earn her nearly £5,000 a day in interest.
But former youth worker Dolores can't go on a spending spree just yet.
She won't get her windfall until Tuesday because tomorrow is a Bank Holiday in Ireland.
