Rewarding Yourself

One of the hardest things in life is to stay on course to your goals. You continue to struggle along not feeling like you will ever get ahead, but if you were to reward yourself for your successes, you would probably notice a slight increase in your productivity and your mood.
As children, many of us were rewarded for the things we did right and when we grew up we lost that reward system, leaving many of us feeling disconnected or that our work was not valued. Creating a personal reward system for accomplishing goals is a great way to bring back that excitement and persistence we had as youths.
For example, say you want to save a couple hundred every month for something important like a car. While the car can be seen as a reward itself, you can help remind yourself along the way why you are working so hard for a car that might take you two or three or even more years to save up for by giving yourself reasonable rewards along the way. While this may feel like you are taking away from your final goal, I find that breaking big goals into smaller reward systems helps me stay on track.
So maybe every year you take a small amount and buy yourself something, like a night out, or something like an MP3 player. The MP3 player then becomes part reward and part reminder. If one year of savings helps you have an account with money plus a MP3 player you can enjoy right now, it will help keep you on track for the next year.
This works especially well for weight loss programs, but remember, for weight loss programs, you can’t reward yourself with a binge, no matter how good that might feel, or your program will eventually fall apart. What you can do is reward yourself with some new clothing for your new body, or a physical trip, like white water rafting or something similar.
Make sure that whatever rewards you pick, that they will add to your enjoyment and remind you of why you are working so hard.
